  Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia Syndrome is a chronic condition causing muscle and joint pain and tenderness in the head, neck, shoulders, upper back, abdomen and thighs. It is often accompanied with fatigue, poor memory and headaches, sleep disturbances, anxiety and depression.

Doctors don't yet know what causes Fibromyalgia, and it has a wide range of symptoms making it hard to precisely diagnose as a condition. Although not all areas may be involved simultaneously, pain may occur in the back of the head, neck,

shoulders, thoracic and lumbar spine, paraspinous regions, buttocks, hips, elbows and knees. It is not unusual for the most significant area of pain to shift over time.

Some of the many symptoms of this condition are:
  • Widespread pain and stiffness
  • Fatigue and poor sleep
  • Headaches and facial pain.
  • Heightened sensitivity to touch, noise, odors and bright lights.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Parasthesia, a tingling sensation or numbness of the hands and feet.
  • Difficulty concentrating or inability to concentrate for very long.
  • Dizziness.
  • Painful menstrual periods.
  • Dry skin of the face, eyes and mouth.
  • Chest pain.
  • Mood changes
Chinese Medicine has the ability to evaluate, diagnose and effectively treat the complicated scenario of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is approached individually with a focus on the individual and his/her presenting symptoms. It is this individualized focus on treatment that allows Chinese medicine to effectively treat fibromyalgia.

Chinese medicine also uses other treatment modalities (in addition to acupuncture) for the person who suffers from this cluster of symptoms. The treatments may include herbal formulas, a form of bodywork called "tui na", moxibustion (warming the area), topical applications and other treatments tailored to each patient. After years of frustration and debilitation, many patients have been able to reclaim their energy, their joy of living and once again are participating more fully in life. We have seen their memory improve, depression and anxiety abate and pain decrease.
